| Name: | Nono! |
|---|
Name: Nono (Buster Machine Number 7)
Fandom: Gunbuster 2/Diebuster/Aim for the Top 2
Age: Unknown, looks like late teens.
Hair color: Pink
Eye Color: Blue with star shaped pupils
Time Taken from canon: After death
Animal Features: Flying fox (bat) features - Ears and small wings.
Other features: She's actually an android but you would probably never be able to tell.
Synopsis: In the distant future, mankind has employed a team of adolescent pilots for an elite branch of the organization Fraternity know as “Topless.” These Topless pilots use buster machines (It’s a Gainax series, so that means huge mecha) to fight against the space monsters that have come pouring in from the outer reaches of the solar system, presumably from around Pluto.
Nono is your average clumsy waitress working in a large city on Mars, her only talent being that she breaks just about everything she touches in half. She was found one day inside an asteroid by the man she came to know as father, who took her back to live on Mars. She dreams of one day becoming a space pilot and protecting the people just like “Nonoriri,” Nono’s mispronunciation for Noriko, the original buster pilot. But there seems to be little chance of that ever happening until one day while on the job she is saved from the rough-housing of some of her regulars by a mysterious pilot with a buster machine. After being informed that the girl is a part of Topless, Nono runs after her and attempts to acquaint herself with the girl, Lal'C, going so far as to call her ‘Onee-sama.’
Just then a space monster lands on Mars and Lal'C uses her buster machine to fight it. However, when Nono’s employee gets caught in the fighting, Nono takes it upon herself to save the woman, lifting part of the monster off the woman’s car. Nono and the monster are then thrown into space and Nono becomes heavily burnt, causing Lal'C to presume she is dead. In a rage, Lal'C tries to attack the monster but is stopped by her buster machine. It turns out Nono is still alive! With a flourish, Nono gets up and literally rips off the tops of her outfit and runs up the monster’s back to give it a huge kick, giving Lal'C enough time to finish the monster off. Nono then joyfully calls to Lal'C, saying that she has, “become Topless.” (Albeit not the right kind of Topless.)
The next few episodes follow her unsuccessful quest to get a buster machine of her own. However, the odds are against her, as none believe an android has the capabilities to become Topless.
Moving on, something that is thought to be a “legendary buster machine” has been discovered, so Nono sneaks out to get a glimpse of it, hoping it could be her buster machine. However, she is caught, but instead of being reprimanded she is told to go to Pluto to seek a defunct buster machine. This is done as a diversion for the space monsters, which veer off to pursue Nono. This allows the twins, the two oldest members of Topless, to excavate the buster machine, which turns out to not be a buster machine at all, but a real space monster. That’s right, the space monsters they had been fighting before weren’t the real monsters at all, but the defenses the earth had set up to protect themselves.
The Topless try to fight this creature but it is no use. They are not strong enough. Lal'C is caught up in this battle, and on the far reaches of Pluto Nono hears her call. With a shout of “Onee-sama!” Nono warps back to Lal’C’s location. Thus Nono has finally awakened and it is revealed that she is a buster machine herself, “Buster Machine Number 7,” built long ago as another protection for humanity. She had lost most of her memories, retaining only the will to be a space pilot and protect the people. Now she is able to do just that, using the swarm of ‘space monsters’ to attack the real one, beating it back though not completely defeating it.
Nono is instantly hailed as the savor of humanity, essentially putting Topless out of business as it is learned that that Toplessness is actually an evolutionary disease, and the space monsters are a defense system set up by mankind to get rid of that disease and the variable gravity wells (the real space monsters). Nono then goes to battle the large space monster, which has now absorbed Excelio, a black hole, which makes it insanely powerful. Nono is ordered to go on a suicide mission to set off a black hole reaction inside it and Lal’C decides to go with her, but Nono sees that the plan will fail, and rather than send both herself and Lal’C to a useless death, she flies off, abandoning the mission and mankind.
Lal’C is furious with Nono and takes on a mission to send the entire earth crashing into the monster. As she begins to put this plan into action Nono reappears inside a large buster machine and puts the earth to a grinding halt. She then goes off to fight the monster, trying all the while not to cause damage to the earth, which is Lal’C’s home and the home of the skylarks that Nono had wanted to see so much one day. Lal’C angrily pounds on Nono using the buster machine, until Lal’C’s Topless powers are gone, rendering her buster machine useless. Nono then proceeds to fight the space monster and becomes badly beaten in the process. Lal’C gets a second wind using the hidden cockpit on her buster machine, and together the two of them fight the space monster and defeat it. Nono has completed her duties as defender of humanity.
As Nono is about to die, she describes a scene of what she wanted to do with Lal’C, which was to visit earth with her and see the skylarks. However, there is no time left for this, and with a smile Nono plunges Lal’C’s hand into her chest, saying that she will give Lal’C her singularity, which manifests itself in a tiny paper crane.
